Who is taking things apart, and where.

Shinsuke Kawahara. Representative director of PATTERN LABO. Inc. A pattern maker by trade. While doing outsourced contract work, he began the vintage garment disassembly research FUKU WO HORU in 2016. In 2024 he renamed the company to PATTERN LABO. and began, in earnest, to re-examine what lies behind the making of clothes.

The working slogan is "passion × sincerity." To carry making that has heat in it, and to make making deeper and more interesting. That's the compass while at work.

A space named NAYA (a barn), in a residential part of Kojima, Kurashiki, Okayama. Usually it's a workshop for disassembly; now and then it becomes an archive room for vintage, and a space for artists to exhibit.

To concentrate on the work, and to be able to talk with visitors properly, visits are by appointment. Come when the mood takes you.

Making clothes has a side that samples and creates anew. I want to be a maker who doesn't look away from that shadow, but explores it first.

Taking vintage apart is the work of reading its connection from the past. Why did they switch here, why did they press the seam allowance this way, why did they choose this fabric. We explore the necessity of the anonymous design of the time.

This isn't a hobby — it's an effort to feed back into making today.
