What I'm digging into this time is a black moleskin jacket from Adolphe Lafont, one of France's representative workwear brands.

The company's roots go back to 1844, in Lyon, the heart of France's textile industry. It began when Louis Lafont, a traveling peddler, set his sights on Lyon — then thriving on silk — and opened a cloth shop. His grandson Adolphe patented an improved "largeot" in 1896 — a high-waisted work trouser with a bib, to which he added a measuring-tape pocket, a back strap for a hammer, and a watch pocket — and registered it as trademark, as France's first workwear brand. In contrast to America's rational, flat mass production, he was a pioneer who brought a French sense of tailoring into workwear.

This individual is a black version of the so-called "Bleu de Travail," using black moleskin (a high-density cotton satin weave). It has an embroidered tag reading SANFOR (shrink-proofing); since the Sanforize process was patented in America in 1930, this is likely a piece from around when postwar French manufacturing began adopting modern processes. The exact era is hard to state definitively, but there's no doubt it's a garment from the transitional period where artisanal quality and mass-production technique intersect.

Moleskin itself was originally made in 19th-century Britain for ironworkers — a dense cotton canvas. In early-20th-century France, a culture of workwear color-coded by trade grew up: carpenter = black, painter = white, machinist = blue, apparently. This jacket's "blue" sits on the extension of that tradition too.

So, this time, while taking this one apart, I'll dig into the "boundary between hand-work and mechanization" in French work.

Collar attachment — the "joint" of binder plus lockstitch

The collar is finished with a flat-fell seam. For a dense, thick fabric like moleskin, this is likely a choice to tuck the raw edge away cleanly while dispersing the thickness.

I observed the facing stitches and the run of the collar attachment closely, and I couldn't find the efficiency-first "one-stroke sewing" you often see in US work. But mass-production ingenuity is properly scattered in too — the stitch heading toward the front edge runs so as to overlap the flat-fell stitch, and the front placket is sewn using a binder (guide).

What especially tickles me is the finish of the placket. A chain stitch run through a binder can't, structurally, draw a curve. So the few centimeters at the top of the front edge and the tangled part heading toward the collar-stop have a process where a lockstitch is sewn over them afterward to hold them down.

Machine as far as the machine can be trusted; from there on, the human hand. Having that switch-over coexist within a single garment is so quintessentially work-like, I can't get enough of it.

What I want you to notice is the corner at the bottom of the pocket. The stitch isn't a right angle — it draws a gentle round curve. I think this is an expression of the sewing worker's speed-consciousness of the time: saving the trouble of stopping once at the corner to change direction, trying to run the machine nonstop as far as possible.

Even a few seconds saved per garment becomes an enormous difference over tens of thousands of garments a year. French artisan work has an image of being "careful and slow," but looking at details like this, you can clearly see that on the mass-production floor, an efficiency mindset not so different from America's was at work.

Sleeve opening — from felled seam to triple-fold, a vague transition point

The cuff is attached in a style sewn from the back, then closed by a stitch struck from the front. This is a spec seen on vintage denim jackets too, balancing strength and appearance.

What I think is important here is the point of "from which side, front or back, do you start the seam." The tension of a machine's upper and lower thread differs, so which one you put on the surface changes how the stitch looks. It's a crucial point that decides the garment's expression.

As an aside, even in present-day Japanese making, whether "front-side sewing" or "back-side sewing" is treated as standard apparently differs by production region. That such regionality remains is one of the interesting things about sewing.

Also, the sleeve opening is finished with a triple fold, and at the underarm the transition point from "felled seam" to "triple fold" is very vague. If you look at the full disassembly image you'll see the felled seam connects straight into the triple fold.

Honestly, even taking it apart, I couldn't quite tell how the switch point is designed at the pattern stage. Probably the artisan switches "at a good spot" by experience. I think it's a remnant of an era when the parts you can't fully manage on a drawing were digested by the hands' feel on the floor.

The whole — the line toward the hem, born of accidental distortion

Finally, a little about the center back.

Before disassembly, I looked at the center back thinking it curved slightly. But once I took it apart and returned the parts to a flat plane, I've judged that line to be "straight."

So why did it look curved?

On top of the visual effect of moleskin's intense puckering, it's highly likely that the worker's hand wavered during sewing, the seam-allowance width came out uneven and meandered, and that's why it looks that way.

And here a question arises.

Even if that were a sewing error or a wobble, and the loss of uniformity in the back seam allowance had accidentally become a "line shaped toward the hem" — if the very state we now find beautiful and wear is taken as the "right answer," then what the original blueprint was may, perhaps, not matter.

Unintended distortion gives rise to a beauty beyond intention.

To let my thoughts wander to the making of the people of that time — including such "accidents" — that connects to now. The meaning of digging into clothes lies somewhere around there, I feel.
